After a three-season absence, Joe Dempsie (Gendry) returned to Game of Thrones in season 7. No worse for wear, Robert Baratheon’s bastard son accompanied the King in the North beyond the Wall, helped capture a wight, and proved himself the fastest sprinter in the Seven Kingdoms.

How will he follow up those feats in season 8? Whatever’s in store for Gendry, Dempsie is done filming it, as he revealed during a Valyrian pass holder-only event at Con of Thrones, which is going down right now in Dallas, Texas.

So not only has Dempsie wrapped filming, but he wrapped very recently, and others have been wrapping up over the last month or so. The end is near.

Dempsie was also in the spotlight during an interview on the Con of Thrones main stage, where he talked more thoroughly about his place in Game of Thrones. He was understandably coy with details about season 8, but he did comment on the that awesome homemade hammer Gendry left beyond the Wall, noting that Gendry would “have to make something new” to replace it. And there were plenty of other tidbits along the way:

  • Dempsie noted that how much fun it was to finally work with Jacob Anderson, as the pair have been friends for some time. Will Gendry and Grey Worm share scenes come next year?
  • Dempsie was full of praise for Maisie Williams (Arya). He’s hoping that she and Gendry end up together so he and Williams can work together again.
  • Did you know that Dempsie auditioned for the part of Finn in the new Star Wars trilogy? How different things might have been for him.
  • During season 3’s “Second Sons,” Melisandre put leeches all over Gendry’s body. Apparently, they were real, at least for some shots.

All and all, Dempsie was an engaging speaker who kept the largest crowd of the convention quite entertained. As for what awaits Gendry in season 8, all will be revealed…next year.
