Unexpected maturity during chemistry read
During the interview, Claffey recalled the moment he first did a chemistry read with Dexter, right at the end of the audition process. He admitted he went into the meeting with certain expectations about working with a child actor.
“I was coming in with a child actor who’s nine years old, so you’re like, I’m gonna have to help him through stuff and different things, and then you realise you’re meeting a, like, forty year old man.”

The Irish actor said he was genuinely stunned by how composed, professional, and mature Dexter was during their first interaction.
“He’s incredible”: High praise from co-star
Claffey didn’t stop at the chemistry read. He continued to praise Dexter’s professionalism both on set and during public appearances.
“It’s just he’s incredible. Especially not even just the show but doing things like this and being so comfortable talking to all these people. I don’t know any other nine-year-old or anything that would be able to do stuff like that. I was still rolling around in my own sh*t. I don’t know how he does it… but yeah, he’s a good dude.”
A promising on-screen duo
Dexter Sol Ansell’s maturity and talent have clearly left a strong impression on the entire cast and crew. His natural ability to handle both the emotional demands of filming and the pressures of interviews has impressed many, with Peter Claffey’s comments highlighting just how special the young actor is. The dynamic between the towering, honorable Dunk and the sharp-witted young prince Egg is the biggest draw of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
