Naomi Watts is gearing up for the lead role of the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series, and the actress couldn’t be more excited.
Based on a story written by George R. R. Martin, author of the A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones novels, and screenwriter Jane Goldman, the prequel is set thousands of years before the events we’ve already seen.

In an interview with Variety, while remaining tight-lipped about the new series, Watts expressed her enthusiasm at becoming part of Martin’s fantasy world.
“It’s a fantastic world, isn’t it? I think there’s so many brilliant elements to that series that make it very exciting, very appealing,” she said.
“I don’t want to dig myself into a big hole here,” she laughed, trying not to spoil anything. “All I want to say is it’s very exciting… I’ll say that again and again and again — and nothing else.”
Watts was also asked if she was prepared for the extreme fandom she’ll be subjected to once she becomes part of the franchise.
She replied: “I don’t know. We’ll see. I know it’s pretty huge and that might take some adjusting, but there’s a reason for that fandom. I think it’s just so well done.”
Game of Thrones season 8 will premiere in April 2019. The show airs on HBO in the US and Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK. Season 7 is now available to buy on DVD, Blu-ray or digital download.
