Major spoilers for Game of Thrones season 8, episode 4 below.
Game of Thrones season eight, episode four delivered too much heartbreak to handle, the worst being the brutal beheading of Nathalie Emmanuel’s Missandei.
Missandei was captured by Cersei (Lena Headey) when Euron’s (Pilou Asbæk) forces attacked the Targaryen fleet and killed Rhaegal.
During a tense stand-off between the two queens, where neither surrendered, Cersei had the Mountain (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) execute Daenerys’ (Emilia Clarke) closest friend and trusted advisor.
‘I thought it was a fantastic scene,’ Nathalie, 30, told Entertainment Weekly.
‘I’ve said in so many interviews that I don’t mind if I die, I’m just happy to be here and be a part of the show.’
At the time of the interview, the scene hadn’t yet been shot but Nathalie said she knew it would be ‘really emotional’ and show Missandei’s ‘strength and fearlessness even though she doesn’t wield a sword’.
And show her fearlessness it did.
When asked for her last words, Missandei screamed: ‘Dracarys!’
‘It’s probably my favourite scene that I’ve read,’ Nathalie added.
However, Missandei’s death just might be what sends Dany over the edge.
She was also one of the only people of colour in the main cast line up so her death has not gone down well with fans.
What’s worse is she and Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) just shared a touching moment planning their future together in episode two.
‘They just like to tease us with a bit of hope and happiness and then take it away, which is why we love it,’ she added.
Fans have flocked to Twitter to share their uproar over the peaceful character’s death.
One fan wrote: ‘I will never forgive the writers for making Missandei die in chains. SHE DESERVED BETTER.’
While another added: ‘Seeing Greyworm’s face as they beheaded Missandei was the most painful thing ever #GameofThrones.’
Next week’s episode promises a bloodbath between Dany and Cersei.
Game of Thrones season 8, episode 5 airs next Sunday and Monday on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.
