Game of Thrones Season 8 episode 5, “The Bells“, had a lot of big moments, the most important ones of which included Daenerys on Drogon, flying over King’s Landing, burning it to smithereens. We saw the buildings of the city perish with dragonfire, which left many fans wondering as to how exactly fire could destroy buildings with such ease. Well, now thanks to Neil DeGrasse Tyson, we have an answer. Read on!
Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who is an astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium talked to INSIDER about the science behind it all, explaining how the air inside the buildings is to be blamed:
“If you have a pocket of air and you rapidly and instantly heat it, it’s a bomb. That is what bombs are. They’re rapidly expanding air creating a shockwave.”
He continued:
“If you have a dragon, it’s not just layering flames. It has [aimed an] insertion of very hot air. That hot air will expand catastrophically and blow stuff down.”
So, there you go. Tyson had previously also commented on Viserion and his blue flame fire. On another note, Tyson discussed how episode 5 disappointed him, and how he was expecting the “Scorpion” harpoons would be more effective against Drogon:
“I know the series is capable of deeper ideas than people killing people. But in a sense it was a climax. It was the battle everyone was anticipating. And you’re hoping the harpoons work.”
