Game of Thrones’ final season: a big heap of steaming disappointment, right?
Well, actually, maybe not: a new poll has claimed that fans of the show were actually more split on their opinion of season 8 than what was suggested by the hate-filled backlash and petitions which largely stole the fan reaction headlines earlier this year.
YouGov, who are more renowned for polling people’s political voting intentions, have delved into the mess to try and get a clearer picture of fan opinion by commissioning a survey on GoT’s last-ever season as part of an overall poll on this month’s Emmys.
The pollsters found that 52% of the GoT fans they surveyed were either ‘somewhat satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with season 8, with only 41% registering their dismay with responses of ‘somewhat dissatisfied’ or ‘dissatisfied’.
7% of responders sat on the fence, helpfully.
While the poll only surveyed 2475 US adults – only 18% of whom said that they’d watched every single GoT episode – these are still interesting returns to take away about fan opinion on season 8.
Given that the poll was only conducted late last month, might it also suggest that, upon reflection, people’s opinion of the final season have softened somewhat?
The YouGov poll also found Game of Thrones topping fan opinion about which show should scoop the Emmy for Outstanding Drama series with a whopping 18% of the vote – although the 48% who replied ‘don’t know’ rather spoiled that part of the survey.
Whether you loved or hated GoT season 8, it’s unlikely that the result of the poll will change your view on the final season of the show at this late stage – as, of course, 2475 other adults could easily have said the opposite about the show and turned the results of the survey upside down.
But it’s at least a comfort for the beleaguered showrunners to hear that not everyone hated season 8 – take that, petition-writers.
