In a new interview with TV Insider, House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal has dropped one of the most revealing teases yet for season 3. When asked to speak about Daemon and Rhaenyra, he suggested that Rhaenyra Targaryen will face a deep moral crisis about how far she’s willing to go to win the war, and what Daemon will do for her.
Quick read:
- Condal explains that Daemon now has clarity on what he wants
- He’s now completely dedicated to giving Rhaenyra the Iron Throne
- Rhaenyra should try becoming like Daemon in pursuit of power
The big quote
According to Condal, Rhaenyra will confront a chilling internal question as the Dance of the Dragons intensifies:
“How ‘Daemon’ am I willing to become in the pursuit of my goal?”
This line perfectly captures the central tension of the upcoming season.

His other words were,
“Daemon comes out of his season 2 experiences at Harrenhal and in the Riverlands with an incredible amount of clarity, something he has not had before in this story. This level of singular focus makes Daemon very dangerous. He believes with every fiber of his being that it was Rhaenyra who was always meant to take the throne, and he will stop at nothing to see it happen.”

Condal gave the clear signal that Daemon is now completely committed to make Rhaenyra ascend the throne and will do whatever it takes for that.
This will show Rhaenyra’s growing struggle between her desire to be a just ruler and the ruthless path her husband Daemon represents.
What this means for Rhaenyra in season 3
Ryan Condal Condal’s quote about Daemon creates a dangerous dynamic between the couple. As the Blacks gain ground (including the highly anticipated Battle of the Gullet), Rhaenyra will be forced to decide how much she’s willing to embrace Daemon’s brutal, unforgiving methods. Will she become more like the rogue prince: willing to burn cities, sacrifice innocents, and rule through fear, or will she try to hold onto her ideals?
Condal’s comment strongly hints that season 3 will explore Rhaenyra’s moral descent, showing her transformation from a reluctant queen into a more hardened and potentially ruthless ruler.
The twisted evolution of Rhaenyra & Daemon
Throughout season 2, fans saw cracks forming in Rhaenyra and Daemon’s relationship. Season 3 appears set to push this even further. While they remain united in their goal of claiming the throne, their methods and mindsets may grow dangerously apart or dangerously similar. This teaser aligns with George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, where Rhaenyra’s rule in King’s Landing becomes increasingly tyrannical, raising questions about whether power corrupts even the most promising leaders.
