The Marvel Cinematic Universe is ever expanding, and it may have just found one of its next major villains. Deadline reports that rumors are swirling that Sacha Baron Cohen has reportedly joined the MCU as Mephisto, and will appear in the upcoming Ironheart series on Disney+. The character is a demon mastermind who has clashed with no small number of Marvel characters over the years in comics, including the Silver Surfer, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, the Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards and more.

The reports claim that Cohen, best known for his comedic documentaries like Borat, has been spotted at Mavel’s UK Pinewood studios. One of Deadline’s sources close to the Ironheart production has confirmed that there are rumblings on the set that Cohen is joining the series as the iconic villain.

Ironheart stars Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, a gifted MIT student who builds the most advanced suit of armor since Tony Stark’s Iron Man. The show’s cast also includes Anthony Ramos, Manny Montana, Shakira Barrera, Alden Ehrenreich, Regan Aliyah, Shea Couleé, and Zoe Terakes. The six-episode series is being created for Disney+ by Chinaka Hodge.

Sacha Baron Cohen rumored to be playing Mephisto in Ironheart

Introducing Mephisto on Ironheart is an interesting choice, since he’s one of Marvel’s more magical villains and Ironheart is a show that will have a strong focus on technology. Perhaps there will be a clash between magic and tech as Riri Williams steps into her own as a superhero?

All that said, Mephisto would be a very logical villain to finally bring into the MCU. He often works behind the scenes to make the lives of various heroes more difficult, and could easily appear in other shows and movies, such as Agatha: Coven of Chaos.

Both Marvel and Cohen’s representatives have declined to comment on the rumor. But given how quickly the last rumor about Harrison Ford joining the MCU as Thunderbolt Ross was substantiated, we’ll be keeping our eye on this one.

Ironheart is slated to hit Disney+ in 2023. You can catch Riri Williams’ first adventure before that this November in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
