The future of the Star Wars franchise is starting to come into focus. It’s hard to believe we’re now five years removed from Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm, which subsequently spawned a new trilogy of Star Wars movies that began with The Force Awakens as well as the creation of anthology-like spinoff films, which began with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. But as Episode IX’s 2019 release looms closer, Lucasfilm and Disney are starting to look to how this franchise will continue once the story of Rey, Finn, etc. is complete.

The first major step was announced last month with the news that Star Wars: The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson will develop a brand new trilogy of Star Wars movies featuring new characters and new settings, offering our first entirely-new Star Wars films since George Lucas’s 1977 original. Details on this new trilogy are scarce beyond the fact that Johnson will at least write and direct the first installment, so when Collider’s own Steve Weintraub spoke with Johnson at the press day for The Last Jedi, he had some questions.

  1. What Rian has to his advantage is a rare trait: quiet confidence. He’s not arrogant or threatening, and that’s something his superiors respond to. Humility can get you away with a lot of things.

  2. I'm already getting exhausted of Stat Wars. I liked having to wait years to see a new Star Wars movie. I still enjoy these movies, I'll still see them on release date each year but its not as special anymore.

  3. I would rather Luca$film have waited until at least TLJ is out before they gift Johnson his own new trilogy on a platter like this. Also, though most of us would like to see KoR era – Johnson may not even do that and that worries me a bit considering the scope of TOR era material to play with.

  4. Still makes me giddy that they have handed him control over a brand new trilogy with all new characters and settings before the world has even seen what he has done with TLJ. They REALLY believe that they have something good on their hands.

  5. EA’s Star Wars games don’t excite me partly because of what’s going on with them. But aside from that, the other issue is all their games are kinda tied to the main Star Wars movies. It feels restrictive that they can’t venture out and battle on distant and unheard of places. So with this new Star Wars trilogy, I really hope he can do his own thing. The Old Republic era would be cool though.
