House of the Dragon Season 3 episode 6 was one for reunions. The most fascinating of those came at the end of the episode when Sunfyre, who appeared to be dead earlier, came to his rider, Aegon’s, aid. On the official Game of Thrones podcast, the episode co-writer opened up about the “Arthurian” secret behind Sunfyre’s return.

Quick read:

  • Aegon made the unexpected decision to fight instead of looking for an escape.
  • Sunfyre came to Aegon’s aid when he needed him to most.
  • The shift in Aegon’s personality might be the reason behind Sunfyre’s return.

House of the Dragon Season 3 co-writer explained Sunfyre’s return

Aegon has been on the run throughout this season, but the mirror Larys Strong showed him in episode 5 certainly left a lasting impact. Ultimately, the disfigured king decided to take a stand for himself and face off against the Mooton host in this episode. Just as he was giving a surprisingly kingly speech, Sunfyre staggered out of the woods. Upon his instruction, the dragon incinerated the entire Mooton host.

Reflecting on this reunion, co-writer and executive producer Philippa Goslett said, “It always seemed very Arthurian for us that, this moment your darkest hour, this moment of your deepest need, something, some almost supernatural force would arise to come to your aid.”

This aid was Sunfyre, whom most thought to be dead. When Aegon finally chose to stop running and fight as a king against an entire army, his dragon came to his rescue, symbolising the shift in power dynamics.

How Aegon’s decision to take a stand reunited him with Sunfyre

For a long time, Aegon tried to run away from his responsibilities and his duties as the king. Larys’s harsh but truthful words gave him the reality check he desperately needed. When Larys suggested that they should run away to escape the Mooton host in this episode, Aegon made the surprising decision to fight. Goslett explained that this was why Sunfyre finally showed up.

She said, “There’s a sense that… if Aegon hadn’t discovered these qualities within himself, maybe Sunfyre might not have come. You know, there’s a sense that Aegon’s awakening is Sunfyre’s awakening, and the two are reunited together.”

As Sunfyre barbecued the Mooton host, Aegon laughed maniacally with Tyland Lannister by his side. Now that Aegon has his dragon, it remains to be seen if he will challenge Rhaenyra’s position as the Queen.
