Game of Thrones fans, we need to talk about this long-standing Jon Snow fan theory, especially after the epic season 8 trailer that dropped yesterday. Everyone is diving deep into what it all means, dissecting every second and angle of the trailer, and that includes us. This particular theory has been smoldering for a long time, and the trailer may have thrown some fresh gasoline on it.
So in the new trailer, at 1:23, we see Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow walk up to the surviving dragons, Drogon and Rhaegal, and while nothing actually happens, it has fans wondering if this is the season when we’ll see Jon ride a dragon. For a long time, only Dany has ever been able to ride these magnificent dragons, although she did have a few passengers last season. Still, no one else can actually pilot them…yet.
In the season 7 episode “Eastwatch”, Drogon let Jon Snow pet him. Whereas Drogon might normally burn someone who tried to a crisp, he extended Jon this huge courtesy. Drogon may have done this just because he was in a good mood that day, or he may have let Jon pet him because, as the son of Rhaegar Targaryen, Jon has Targaryen blood.
It’s not absolutely necessary for someone to have Targaryen blood to ride a dragon — during the Dance of the Dragons, a commoner named Nettles was able to tame the dragon Sheepstealer by bringing it a fresh sheep every morning. Still, it’s commonly accepted that having Targaryen blood endears dragons to you. And as we learned at the end of season 7, Jon definitely has that. Yes, it means he committed accidental incest, but it also means he might be able to ride a dragon, which is a nice consolation prize.
Then there are the enigmatic visions Dany has during her visit to the House of the Undying in A Clash of Kings. There, she sees her brother Rhaegar saying that his son (Jon?) is destined to be the Prince That Was Promised, and that “the dragon has three heads.” Dany has three dragons. Does this mean that they will have three riders, and is Jon one of them?
Admittedly, the Night King kind of threw a wrench (or an ice spear) into this theory when he killed Viserion, resurrected him and took him for his mount, but we can make it work. Maybe the Night King is a Targaryen, too? Ahhh, I know, one theory at a time.
Anyway, after that trailer, fans are taking to social media and airing their thoughts on this:

So will Jon ride a dragon in season 8? We don’t have firm answers, but the trailer has given us plenty of questions, which might be even better. Let’s watch it again.
