‘They will fight hard, like Northerners,’ Cregan Stark promised Jacaerys Velaryon at the Wall. We all remember this scene from the Season 2 premiere of House of the Dragon. And true to his word, Cregan Stark has now sent an army of Winter Wolves south to fight for the Blacks.
But who exactly are the Winter Wolves? Let’s take a closer look at the fierce Northern warriors introduced in the Riverlands and the tragic tradition that drives them to march towards certain death.
Who are the Winter Wolves?
The Winter Wolves, or ‘Greybeards’ as Cregan Stark calls them, are seasoned warriors of the North who have survived and fought through countless battles. Their reputation is not defined by their age alone, but by the experience they have earned on the battlefield. They are fierce, battle-hardened, and utterly fearless.
Their history, however, is a tragic one.
Winters in the North are long and unforgiving. When food becomes scarce, older warriors often leave their homes and families behind and march south to fight in wars elsewhere in the realm. In doing so, they reduce the burden on those remaining at home and help ensure the survival of the younger generation. For many of these men, it is a one-way journey.

As a result, the Winter Wolves do not fear death. In many cases, they actively embrace it. That mentality makes them one of the most formidable forces in Westeros and gives the Blacks a significant advantage in the battles to come.

House of the Dragon first introduced the Winter Wolves in a brief but important scene during the Season 2 finale. As the episode teased the war ahead, veteran Northern soldiers could be seen marching south beneath the banners of House Stark.
The Season 3 premiere expands on their role. Upon joining Daemon Targaryen’s forces in the Riverlands, Roderick Dustin makes his intentions clear, declaring, “We have come to die for the Dragon Queen.”
Roddy the Ruin quickly proves that these are not merely words. He demonstrates both his determination and his prowess by presenting Daemon with the head of Jason Lannister.
Ryan Condal sheds light on the Winter Wolves
In the official House of the Dragon Season 3 podcast, showrunner Ryan Condal explained the origins of the Winter Wolves and the harsh reality behind the Northern custom.
He said, “In the north when winter falls they send all the kind of older warriors third and fourth sons away to go do war elsewhere in the kingdom because they can’t feed them.”
Further explaining the significance of these Northern warriors, Condal added, “They didn’t say we’ve come to fight for the dragon queen. They said we’ve come to die for the dragon queen. I mean they know that this is a one-way ticket and that is the culture of the north.”
That distinction is important. The Winter Wolves are not marching south in search of glory or reward. They understand exactly what awaits them and willingly accept their fate.
The upcoming episodes of House of the Dragon Season 3 will undoubtedly showcase the strengthened forces of the Blacks now that the Winter Wolves have joined their ranks. And with allies such as Roderick Dustin fighting alongside them, Queen Rhaenyra is certainly not backing down any time soon.
