It always happens, right? Sooner or later, most major films are re-released in freshly packaged âdirectorâs cutâ versions, longer, more indulgent edits sandwiched between loads of new behind-the-scenes footage, star interviews, storyboard reveals, etc. So itâs not surprising that fans of director Zack Snyder and his Justice League (2017) have spent the last two years clamoring for the release of his âSnyder cutâ of the movie, a fabled edit Snyder supposedly made before he had to leave the production due to a personal tragedy. Warner Bros. called in Avengers director Joss Whedon to finish up..
Snyder himself has added fuel to the fire on Twitter, together with stars Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot and Ray Fisher. Together, theyâve gotten #ReleaseTheSnyderCut to catch fire.
Snyder fans thrilled to the idea, hoping the long-awaited âSnyder cutâ would appear, noting it could easily serve as a glitzy centerpiece for HBO Max, WarnerMediaâs shiny new streaming service. But the bubble has been burst.
âThereâs no way itâs ever happening,â a âknowledgeable insiderâ has told Variety, who reports that any wish for a Justice League Snyder cut is a âpipe dream,â mainly because it doesnât exist (as a finished, or even started, project):
Logistically, however, thereâs little appetite at the studio for spending the millions of dollars it would require to finish visual effects and editing work on Snyderâs version, particularly as âJustice Leagueâ was a commercial disaster. There are currently no plans to release a Snyder version either in theaters or on HBO Max.
One would think such news might crush Zack Snyder fans, but Batman and Wonder Woman didnât teach them to give up easily. Thereâs extra footage in a vault out there somewhere, just begging to be touched up and displayed in all its glory.
