The official trailer for House of the Dragon gives us drama, war, and — finally — dragons! In a month and a day, we’ll be watching.

HBO has dropped the official trailer for House of the Dragon, its upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series! Watch below:

Okay, there’s a lot that jumps out here. Let’s hit some highlights:

  • First up, the score by Ramin Djawadi sounds tremendous. I love the thundering drumbeats. Very propulsive.
  • The trailer lays out the story pretty effectively. Some 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, King Viserys I Targaryen wants to make his daughter Rhaenyra his heir, which pleases some people and ticks off others, particularly the king’s volatile younger brother Daemon (Matt Smith). Rhaenyra grows up assuming she will be inherit the Iron Throne, but there’s a challenge in the form of her friend Alicent Hightower, who ends up marrying her dad and has a son whom she would rather see take the throne.
  • Dragons! We know the show will be full of them, but we haven’t gotten a good look at them until now.
  • The show definitely does look dark and foreboding. This is a tragedy on an epic scale, so that’s appropriate.

House of the Dragon premieres on HBO and HBO Max on August 21. Not long now.
