Warning: Contains spoilers for the Game of Thrones season eight finale.

Game of Thrones has been about conflict and drama as nobles fight to be King or Queen, but also dragons.

Drogon has been the largest and most powerful dragon throughout the series, and he has been very protective of Daenerys Targaryen.

He has been by her side since the first season of Game of Thrones, and has protected the Mother of Dragons throughout her battle to rule Westeros.

But in the season eight finale, Drogon was seen flying away from Westeros after a shock plot twist.

So where has Dany’s dragon gone to now that the fight for the Iron Throne is over and why has he left?

Where did Drogon go in Game of Thrones?

In the final episode, after the dust settles following the battle for Westeros, Daenerys is seen admiring her new iron throne, having defeated and killed Cersei Lannister.

Her lover and nephew Jon Snow then joins her in the throne room, which is largely reduced to rubble from her dragon fire, and the pair kiss.

But as they embrace, Jon takes his sword and stabs Daenerys through the heart, killing her over fears she will continue her killing spree of innocent bystanders now she was Westeros.

Drogon is immediately at Dany’s side and in a rage over Jon’s actions, unleashes his fire and burns down the iron throne, before scooping the Mother of Dragons up and flying off.

It is later mentioned in the episode that Drogon was last spotted flying east towards Essos.

It’s not clear exactly where the dragon is going, but it’s likely not to be good news for anybody who is near wherever he decides to land.

Daenerys originally had three dragons, who were born during the final episode of season one.

She named them Drogon after her husband Khal Drogo, Viserion after her brother Viserys and Rhaegal after her brother Rhaegar.

She was able to train her dragons to breathe fire on command whenever she said the word ‘Dracarys’, which translates from High Valyrian to mean ‘Dragonfire’.

The first death of one of her dragons occurred in season seven when Viserion was hit with an ice spear by the Night King, while Daenerys was trying to rescue Jon Snow and several others Beyond the Wall.

The second death happened in the fourth episode of season eight when Rhaegal was hit multiple times by scorpion bolts fired by Euron Greyjoy.

It was a surprise attack that struck near Dragonstone, and it is considered to be a key part in causing Daenerys to go ahead with the destruction of King’s Landing.

That, and the fact Cersei commanded the death of her trusted advisor Missandei, whose final word before being murdered was ‘Dracarys’.
