The battle for the Iron Throne has been one of the biggest talking points throughout Game of Thrones.

Many key characters have made it their ambition to be crowned king or queen, but very few have managed to achieve it.

The desire to sit on the throne has seen the battle for the five kings spill blood across Westeros, as well as the birth of three dragons as Daenerys Targaryen tries to claim what she feels is rightfully hers.

Made entirely of swords, the throne in King’s Landing is for whoever is recognised as the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms.

Before the start of season one, Westeros was overlooked by King Aerys, known as the Mad King after he descended into insanity and began burning people alive.

He was later killed by Jaime Lannister during Robert’s Rebellion and Robert Baratheon then became the next king.

Only four people have been crowned King or Queen of the Seven Kingdom’s across the first seven seasons, despite many people across Westeros and beyond claiming that they are the rightful heir to the throne.

Robert Baratheon

Season 1 Episode 1 – Season 1 Episode 7

Robert Baratheon was the first king of the Seven Kingdoms at the start of the Game of Thrones series.

He took the throne from Aerys Targaryen in a battle that took place several years before season one is set.

The early episodes of the first season saw him turn to Ned Stark to become his hand and help him rule the kingdom.

He had little desire to rule and was more interested in drinking, eating and hunting.

His reign came to an abrupt end when he was wounded while on a hunt, which occurred under suspicious circumstances.

Joffrey Baratheon

Season 1 Episode 8 – Season 4 Episode 2

Joffrey took the crown shortly after the death of Robert Baratheon and he quickly made his mark after overseeing the execution of Ned Stark.

During his reign he initially becomes betrothed to Sansa Stark, but he later marries Margaery Tyrell after the Tyrell house aids the Lannisters in the Battle of the Blackwater against Stannis Baratheon.

Much of Joffrey’s reign is overlooked by Tyrion and later Tywin Lannister as his hand.

During this time the Battle of the Blackwater and the Red Wedding sees his hold on the seven kingdom remain strong.

His time as king comes to an end when he is poisoned on the day of his wedding.

Tommen Baratheon

Season 4 Episode 5 – Season 6 Episode 10

Tommen was immediately recgnised as the next person to take over following the death of his older brother Joffrey, but he wasn’t officially crowned until the fifth episode of season 4.

He has little involvement in the day-to-day activities of ruling the seven kingdoms, with Tywin Lannister handling most of the duties as hand of the king.

Tommen later marries Margaery Tyrell but she quickly manages to manipulate him as she tries to get his mother Cersei away from King’s Landing.

Following the death of Maragaery at the hands of Cersei, Tommen commits suicide by jumping out of a window.

Cersei Lannister

Season 6 Episode 10 – Current

Cersei was crowned the Queen Regnant of the Seven Kingdoms following the death of her son, as well as the extinction of the Baratheon family.

She faces many challenges as the new ruler with Jon Snow now being declared the King in the North, while Daenerys Targaryan has also arrived in Westeros to make her claim for the Iron Throne.

With enemies at every turn and the White Walkers closing in, the future of Cersei’s reign could be in danger.
