Alicent Hightower’s decision to abandon Team Green in House of the Dragon Season 3 comes after years of political pressure, personal sacrifices, and devastating consequences that have finally pushed her beyond the limits of obedience. The second episode reshapes the Targaryen conflict as Rhaenyra regains control of King’s Landing and Otto Hightower faces the final consequence of the choices that helped ignite the war.
Rhys Ifans returns as Otto for a final appearance after his secret imprisonment in the Red Keep, where he is presented to Rhaenyra and Daemon after Team Green loses its grip on the capital. His death becomes a symbolic end to the old strategy that shaped the war from the beginning.

Rhaenyra ultimately executes Otto after reclaiming the Iron Throne, leaving Alicent to confront the destruction of the world her father helped create. The moment changes Alicent because her connection to Team Green has always been tied to duty rather than personal desire. The cause she protected for years has taken away her family, her peace, and her relationship with Rhaenyra.
Instead of continuing the fight for a crown that has already destroyed so much, Alicent begins placing her attention on saving Helaena and giving her daughter a chance at a quieter life. House of the Dragon writer Sara Hess explained that a system demanding ambition and sacrifice shaped the characters throughout the series:
“This system has fucked them… they’ve been raised you know in this manner where they they want things and they you know they’re they’re led to believe that they need to you know achieve certain things and it’s it’s kind of ruined them.”
Hess explained that Alicent’s focus shifts entirely toward protecting her daughter:
“Her world does dwindle to I will do whatever I need to do to get Helaena out of here and give her a normal life and that’s it that’s all I care about right now.”
The series continues to show that the greatest casualties of the Targaryen war are often the people trapped inside it. House of the Dragon Season 3 is available to stream on HBO and Max.
