Nightflyers is a new Syfy original series based on the almost 40-year-old novella by A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R Martin. Is it worth the watch?
Syfy original series are hit or miss. Sometimes they’re pure gold, like the dramedy Z Nation, and sometimes they immediately fall flat like the promising Superstition. But no matter how good some of the shows have been, none have hooked me so hard with the first trailer as Nightflyers. If I was a fish, that hook would be firmly nestled in my fish face 30 seconds into the first official teaser:
Nightflyers was created by Jeff Buhler and is based on the 1980 novella written by George R.R. Martin. This sci-fi/horror story follows a crew of space explorers in the year 2093. They’re aboard the most advanced ship ever created: the Nightflyer. They intend to leave the solar system, traveling further than any human before, in search of a group of aliens called the volcryn. The mission is already scary enough, but when strange things begin to happen on the ship, the crew realizes that the thing they need to fear most is already in their midst.
Nightflyers has a large cast a show with an isolated setting, including Jodie Turner-Smith, Gretchen Mol, Eoin Macken, David Ajala, Angus Sampson, Sam Strike, Maya Eshet, Brian F. O’Byrne, Phillip Rhys and Gwynne McElveen.
To adapt the story for TV, changes had to be made, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the show differs from the novella. The setting looks dark and claustrophobic, and the isolation of deep space mean there will be no one to help our characters but themselves. I cannot wait to see what Nightflyers has to offer. We’ll be back after every episode with a recap of what happened and what we thought of it. And the binge begins…now:
