Westworld star Simon Quarterman has opened up on meeting Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss on the set of the sci-fi epic as they filmed their super-secret cameo for season three.
Benioff and Weiss had a blink-and-miss it cameo in the second episode of the third series, in which Simon’s character Lee Sizemore came back from the dead as a figment of Maeve’s (Thandie Newton) consciousness.
In a chat with Metro.co.uk, Simon admitted that he met the two showrunners on the iconic Westworld laboratory set right as they were filming their scenes.
‘I met them as they were doing it!’ he enthused. ‘I think they were just about to shoot their scene after me, so we were there when they were shooting.
‘It was cool! It was a fun little bit.’
Simon also told us that, much like everything involving Westworld, it was a massive secret to keep – especially since he was constantly asked about returning to the show too.
‘We have to keep schtum about everything,’ he revealed. ‘There was nothing I could say.
‘I was getting asked here and there if I was coming back…you’re tying yourself into a pretzel trying to answer those questions.’
But, to everyone’s surprise (including his own), Lee Sizemore has indeed returned to Westworld after his heroic sacrificial death at the end of the show’s second season.
He’s now occupying a special place in Maeve’s mind, like her very own personal Jiminy Cricket. And it was a secret Simon’s had to keep for a long time, too.
He revealed: ‘I found out about a couple of years ago now, it’s all such a long process, it was about two years ago,
‘[Creator] Lisa Joy rang me and told me I was going to be coming back. Obviously, I was very excited. I just had no clue it was going to be in this capacity, absolutely no idea. ‘
The internet well and truly broke and Benioff and Weiss made their appearance in the show, which shares a home channel with Game of Thrones in HBO.
It turns out that it was author George RR Martin who actually made the crossover event a reality.
Westworld season 3 continues Mondays at 9pm on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.
