Emma D’Arcy, best known as Rhaenyra Targaryen on House of the Dragon, is looking to spend more time behind the camera. In a new Out100 profile, the actor revealed that their production company’s debut feature is currently in development and spoke openly about a long-standing desire for greater creative control.

A drive for control

D’Arcy told Out Magazine,

“I have a chronic need for creative control that often threatens to breach the bounds of an actor’s remit, so I’m keenly looking forward to being one of the people in charge.”

The comment aligns with previous remarks in which they have described liking “being in charge” and having strong feelings about text, narrative, and how stories are made.

The feature highlights their growing body of work outside of Westeros. This year they brought Alexander Zeldin’s The Other Place (a reimagining of Antigone) to New York after its London run, starred opposite Tom Cruise and Riz Ahmed in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Digger, and wrapped Stages, the feature directorial debut of House of the Dragon co-star Sonoya Mizuno.

They have also described being drawn to projects that examine “the knottier parts of human behavior,” especially the power structures around a character.

From actor to maker

D’Arcy’s interest in authorship is not new. They have previously spoken about considering themselves “head of department for Rhaenyra” on House of the Dragon and about the creative freedom the adaptation has given them.

Moving into producing and directing would allow them to shape projects more fully rather than operating within the constraints of an actor’s role.
