Game of Thrones‘ Rose Leslie stars in our first glimpse at former Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat’s latest TV project – a new adaptation of The Time Traveler’s Wife.

Moffat, who ran Doctor Who between 2010 and 2017, is adapting Audrey Niffenegger’s 2003 novel, which tells the complex love story of Henry DeTamble and Clare Abshire, for HBO Max.

The “intricate and magical” series will star Thrones actress Leslie, who played Ygritte in the HBO fantasy drama, as artist Clare and Castlevania star Theo James as librarian Henry, with HBO today releasing a first-look image of the pair.

The couple are looking comfortable in the photo as they laugh over a drink on the sofa, but fans of the book will know that their love life is far from straightforward.

In the story, Henry suffers from a very rare genetic disorder which comes to be known as Chrono-Impairment, which causes him to involuntarily travel through time at random intervals.

When he meets Clare at a library, it becomes clear that she has known him for most of her life, although he has never met her in his own timeline. From this point on, their timelines converge as Henry starts to travel backwards and forwards in Clare’s life – meaning that their relationship becomes increasingly difficult to manage.

The story was previously adapted into a movie in 2009, starring Hulk actor Eric Bana as Henry and Doctor Strange‘s Rachel McAdams as Clare.

The new adaptation is directed by Game of Thrones director David Nutter, while Sherlock showrunner Moffat has written the scripts.

Moffat has previously described adapting the novel as “a dream come true”, revealing that the story actually inspired the timey-wimey plot of one of his most popular Doctor Who episodes.

“I read Audrey Niffenegger’s The Time Traveler’s Wife many years ago, and I fell in love with it,” he said. “In fact, I wrote a Doctor Who episode called ‘The Girl In the Fireplace’ as a direct response to it.

“When, in her next novel, Audrey had a character watching that very episode, I realised she was probably on to me. All these years later, the chance to adapt the novel itself, is a dream come true.”

The Time Traveler’s Wife will stream on HBO Max.

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray. Spin-off House of the Dragon is now filming.
