Game of Thrones star Lena Headey is moving behind the camera to make her directorial debut.

Nominated for five Primetime Emmy Awards for her role as Cersei Lannister, Headey’s first movie in the director’s chair – shooting this autumn – is an adaptation of SJI Holliday’s psychological thriller novel Violet (via Deadline).

It follows two solo female travellers who decide to spend the next leg of their adventure together, only for them to discover that neither one is who they claim to be.

Speaking about her career change, Headey shared in a statement: “Susi’s Violet is a compulsive page-turner that stayed with me long after I finished the book – it’s exciting that my first feature as a director will be such an intense female thriller.

“It’s a wild ride to the finish with vast cinematic scope, centring around two very complex women who will completely unravel over the course of the film. I can’t wait to get rolling.”

Goldfinch Entertainment’s chief operating officer Phil McKenzie added: “We’re excited to be supporting the multi-talented Lena Headey’s foray into feature directing with this irresistible and chilling female-fronted thriller.

“Gareth [Pritchard, screenwriter] has deftly selected and adapted an impossible-to-put-down book into a riveting exploration of a casual friendship that goes deeply awry – and we can’t wait to see it come to life on screen.”

Headey has a history with female-centric thrillers, after starring in last year’s Gunpowder Milkshake opposite Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy), Michelle Yeoh (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Carla Gugino (The Haunting of Hill House) and Angela Bassett (Black Panther).

Let’s hope Violet fares slightly better with the critics.
