A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ showrunner, Ira Parker, has confirmed that the series is fully prepared to use time jumps in future seasons to naturally age up young Egg (played by Dexter Sol Ansell) as the story progresses across decades.
In a new interview with The Playlist, Parker addressed one of the biggest logistical questions facing the long-running prequel series: how to handle the aging of its youngest main character.

Open to time jumps
While Season 2 (based on The Sworn Sword) takes place only about a year after Season 1, Parker made it clear the show won’t be afraid to move forward in time when needed:

“Dexter doesn’t have to be eight years old for a 10-season run. We want this to happen. There was a little bit of urgency, I think, going into season two because there’s only about a year, year and a half in between them. Season three, or book three, there is actually a pretty small jump. But it doesn’t kill us if it’s a little bit of a larger jump.”
Parker also referenced details already present in George R.R. Martin’s novellas that support this approach:
“And there’s things in the book about Egg slowly having some hairs coming in there that he needs to get. And so it was already written in that he is getting to this next level of maturity. But yeah, look, I don’t know if you have kids, but my kids aren’t that old yet, but everyone tells me it’s around this age. It’s around 12, 13 where they make a jump. And so we know something’s coming.”
Long-term ambition
The showrunner previously expressed hope for 12 to 15 seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Although only three novellas have been published so far, Parker revealed that George R.R. Martin has already plotted out 10 Dunk & Egg stories, giving the series plenty of source material to work with. Egg is approximately 9 years old in Season 1, and Dexter Sol Ansell turns 12 in September 2026. For the immediate future, the young actor’s real-life aging should align well with the character’s timeline.
However, larger time jumps will become necessary as the story moves toward Egg’s teenage years and eventual rise as one of Westeros’ most important Targaryen kings.
A smart solution
By embracing time jumps, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is taking a practical and story-friendly approach similar to how Game of Thrones aged up its younger characters over its eight seasons. This strategy allows the series to maintain authenticity while giving Dexter Sol Ansell room to grow naturally into more mature versions of Prince Egg.
Fans can expect Season 2 to stay relatively close in timeline to Season 1, but should prepare for noticeable time progression in Season 3 and beyond.
