Working through IGN, HBO has revealed the drop date for the Game of Thrones season 7 home video releases. Both the DVD and Blu-ray versions of the season will be out on December 12, in time for the holidays. The season will also be available to download later this month, on September 25.

IGN has info about the extras we can look forward to as well. Both the DVD and Blu-ray releases will contain the following:

  • Audio Commentaries. As usual, there will be audio commentaries on every episode. Watch out for showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss to show up, as well as stars like Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm), Gwendoline Christie (Brienne), Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth), Kit Harington (Jon Snow), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), and more.
  • From Imagination to Reality: Inside the Art Department-Extensive. This two-part featurette revolves around production designer Deborah Riley and her art department. How did they go about creating the sets for Casterly rock, Highgarden, the Dragonpit, Dragonstone 2.0, and more?
  • Fire & Steel: Creating the Invasion of Westeros. The cast and crew sound off about the biggest moments of the season in interviews. Sounds good and general.
  • Conquest & Rebellion: An Animated History of the Seven Kingdoms. Written by Game of Thrones staff writer and loremaster Dave Hill, this series will focus on Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros some 300-odd years before the events of the series. Narrators include Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Pilou Asbæk (Euron Greyjoy), Conleth Hill (Varys), Aidan Gillen (Littlefinger), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), and Harry Lloyd (Viserys Targaryen).

Below, check out a clip from the Animated History of the Seven Kingdoms. Narrated by Viserys, this clip is about the Targaryen family leaving Old Valyria for Dragonstone.

Looking pretty good! It makes you wonder if Aegon’s invasion isn’t one of the prequel ideas HBO is turning around in its head.

As usual, the Blu-ray will have a few fixings that the DVD package doesn’t. In addition to everything above, the Blu-ray release will also feature seven History and Lore segments that go into detail on subjects like Highgarden, the Dragonpit, Prophecies of the Known World, the latter of which sounds very intriguing. If these are like past History and Lore segments, they’ll be animated and narrated by members of the cast, like this one about House Tarly from the season 6 Blu-ray:

As before, the season 7 Blu-ray release will also feature in-episode guides, which offer information about characters and locations episode by episode. As for the digital release, that will come with a special feature called “Creating the North and Beyond,” which will mostly be about the massive battle beyond the Wall in…um, “Beyond the Wall.”

It all looks promising. This should tide fans over while they they wait for season 8…for a month or so, anyway.
