In a recent humble interview clip, Peter Claffey, the Irish actor cast as Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, reacted with genuine disbelief when asked about becoming the main character in the new Game of Thrones prequel series.

Quick read:

  • Peter Claffey is still surprised over his selection as Dunk
  • He describes it as a life-changing event
  • He says he heartily believes in the Dunk and Egg story

The viral reaction

The moment comes from his appearance on The Tommy Tiernan Show (RTÉ One), where the host pointed out his central role:

“It sounds like you’re one of the main characters in the show.”

Claffey replied to this with a laugh,

“Yeah, he’s the main, he’s the lead.”

“Yeah, I can’t f**king believe it either, to be honest with you.”

He went on to describe the opportunity as “phenomenal” and “life-changing,” especially because he genuinely loves the fantasy genre and believes in the story of Dunk and Egg.

“Especially coming into a franchise or a fantasy that I actually do love as well… this is the big break, but I actually believe in this story as well.”

Staying true to his craft

Claffey reflected on how rare such a position is in an actor’s career. Landing the lead in a major HBO series tied to the Game of Thrones universe opens doors and gives him choices for future roles. However, he made it clear he wants to approach his career thoughtfully:

“I want to challenge myself and do stuff that I actually believe in rather than go off and do the blockbuster-y thing… I want to sort of really commit to finding good performances and challenge myself in that regard.”

The clip highlights Claffey’s grounded personality, an actor who still seems surprised by his rapid rise to playing one of Westeros’ most beloved future legends.
