House of the Dragon season 3 is finally here, and it has returned with a bang. While the final episode of season 2 helped set the stage for an all-out conflict between the Greens and the Blacks, the opening episode of season 3 wasted no time delivering one of the most anticipated events from the source material – the Battle of the Gullet.

Book readers already knew this battle would be devastating. However, the series broke a long-standing tradition by moving such a major spectacle away from a season finale and instead using it to open a new season. The result was a premiere that immediately threw viewers into the chaos of the Dance of the Dragons.

How did House of the Dragon season 2 end?

House of the Dragon season 2 featured several major moments, including Blood and Cheese and the Battle of Rook’s Rest, both of which escalated the conflict between the Greens and the Blacks.

Yet, despite all the buildup, the finale itself served primarily as a table-setting episode. Rather than ending with a massive battle, the episode focused on political manoeuvring and preparation for the war ahead. It concluded with a significant meeting between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower, while both factions began mobilising their forces.

Although the episode was well-received, many fans felt that something was missing. Some even speculated that the Battle of the Gullet had originally been intended for season 2. Following the reduction of the season’s episode count, however, the battle was ultimately pushed into season 3. This explanation has been echoed by multiple reports surrounding the show’s production.

Showrunner Ryan Condal Explains the Decision

In the official season 3 podcast, showrunner Ryan Condal discussed the decision to move the Battle of the Gullet to the season 3 premiere. Reflecting on the storytelling pattern established by the previous Game of Thrones series, Condal said:

“Game of Thrones kind of set this almost unique to its rhythm of the big thing happens at the end and or at the penultimate episode right before the end.”

That observation is certainly true. Major events such as the Battle of the Bastards, the Siege of Meereen, and other large-scale conflicts traditionally appeared near the end of a season. Condal, however, wanted to break that pattern. He explained:

“(It) wouldn’t it be fun to just come out of the gate and just break all the toys… to just sort of break the rhythm of our own show the story rhythm that we have and just come out of the gate with a big bang.”

The decision also allowed the creative team additional time and resources to properly realise one of the most significant battles in Fire & Blood. Condal previously noted that the Battle of the Gullet required enormous production resources and deserved the scale and attention it ultimately received.

The gamble appears to have paid off. The season 3 premiere delivered the long-awaited battle in spectacular fashion and included one of the story’s most heartbreaking moments –  the death of Jacaerys Velaryon. His fate left many viewers stunned and immediately raised the stakes for the war ahead.

With the weeks-ahead trailer promising even more destruction, dragons, and bloodshed, season 3 looks set to be the most action-packed chapter of House of the Dragon yet. What were your thoughts on the Battle of the Gullet? Tell us in the comments.
