The start of paranoia
D’Arcy explained that discovering Daeron was an impostor and that Ormund had deceived her, fundamentally changes Rhaenyra’s mindset:
“Ormund is a totally unknown quantity; he’s this kind of erratic element. And I think increasingly, and we see this as we go forward, he sort of becomes the boogeyman for Rhaenyra, and fuels a broader distrust of her council, her allies, her court at large.”

From victory to distrust
What should have been a moment of strength for Rhaenyra quickly turns into uncertainty. The fake Daeron plot not only undermines her intelligence network but also plants seeds of doubt about everyone around her. Ormund, previously a distant figure, now looms large in her mind as an unpredictable threat, making every alliance and piece of advice suspect.
This shift from rebel leader to a queen battling internal paranoia adds another layer to her character. After years of fighting for the throne, Rhaenyra finds that ruling brings new, more insidious dangers; not from obvious enemies, but from deception and eroded trust.
A turning point for Rhaenyra’s reign
D’Arcy’s comments suggest this twist marks the start of a more unstable phase for Rhaenyra. As Season 3 progresses, her growing paranoia is likely to influence major decisions, strain relationships with her council, and deepen the personal toll of the war.
