In House of the Dragon Season 3, Rhaenyra’s inner turmoil is conveyed not only through dialogue and performance but also through the camera itself. On HBO’s official Game of Thrones podcast, director Clare Kilner explained how she and her crew developed a unique filming approach to immerse viewers directly into Rhaenyra’s perspective, allowing the audience to feel her trauma as she experiences it.

Immersing the audience in Rhaenyra’s view

Kilner revealed that she collaborated closely with Sean, the A‑camera operator, and Ren, the focus puller, to create shots that hovered around Rhaenyra’s head, ear, and face. “We really were feeling like we were with her, seeing what she was seeing, and at times losing focus on what she was seeing,” Kilner explained. This technique deliberately blurs the line between clarity and disorientation, mirroring Rhaenyra’s fractured state of mind.

Sound design punctuating the trauma

Kilner added that while framing shots near Rhaenyra’s ear, she envisioned sound cues to tie the moments together. “I really want a sound to sort of like… pull those moments together and then sort of punctuate the scenes as we go through,” she said. By combining visual intimacy with auditory emphasis, the directors crafted a sensory experience that places viewers inside Rhaenyra’s trauma, rather than observing it from a distance.
