Clinton Liberty, who plays Addam of Hull (Addam Velaryon), has shared insightful thoughts on his character’s motivations during the Targaryen civil war. In an interview with Pop Base, Liberty explained that Addam is searching for clarity in a chaotic and morally ambiguous conflict.
Quick read:
- Addam is learning about war and differences for the first time
- He’s stuck in a moral dilemma now
- He’s slowly discovering who he actually wants to be
Addam’s search for clarity
Liberty described his character’s core desire:
“Addam wants clarity. He is probably the only person who hasn’t been in a war or even been in a physical altercation or conflict between two factions before, so he’s learning a lot — that people are very easily changed and persuaded by power, and morality starts to go out the window.”
Unlike many characters deeply entrenched in the war, Addam enters the conflict as a relative outsider, making his journey one of discovery and self-reflection.

The moral dilemma
The actor highlighted Addam’s internal struggle:
“But he seems to be the only one who’s trying to figure out, ‘Do I want to keep my morality and disappoint, possibly, my family, or do I want to sacrifice myself and my morality for the acceptance and validation of others, i.e. Corlys and Alyn?’”
This conflict between staying true to his principles and seeking approval from Corlys and Alyn makes Addam one of the most grounded and relatable characters in the series.
Slowly finding himself
Liberty noted that Addam’s arc is about gradual understanding:
“So he just wants clarity, and throughout the whole war he’s slowly gaining an understanding of what he wants to be, who he wants to be, and who he wants to surround himself with.”
As Season 3 progresses, viewers can expect Addam’s moral compass to set him apart in a war where power often overrides ethics. Clinton Liberty’s portrayal brings a refreshing perspective to the Dance of the Dragons. Addam’s quest for clarity and integrity amid betrayal and ambition makes him a compelling figure fans are rooting for.
