Hunger, neglect, and broken promises
Bew explained that Hugh and the other dragonseeds were kept in the dark, promised rewards that never materialized. “They misjudge it right from the beginning. When they first meet us and we get the dragons, there’s been a famine. People have been starving for a long, long time. Then suddenly we’re sitting around at this huge table eating all this food while everyone back home is starving. They are so out of touch.”

The inevitability of betrayal
As Bew put it, “That loyalty only lasts so long. And yeah, well, maybe you shouldn’t be in charge.” His words foreshadow Hugh’s eventual break from his allies, a betrayal rooted not in ambition alone but in disillusionment with leadership.
