One of the most talked-about moments in House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2 is Aemond Targaryen’s arrival at Harrenhal; where the usually unstoppable prince goes from being in complete control to desperately begging Alys Rivers for help.
Stars Ewan Mitchell and Gayle Rankin, who play these characters, recently opened up to Decider about filming that intense power flip and what it means for their characters.
Quick read:
- Ewan Mitchell and Gayle Rankin both reflect upon Aemond’s vulnerability at Harrenhall
- The sudden shift of demeanour has left fans thinking
- Fans are eager to see how the show will explore Aemond and Alys’ relationship further
Playing the instant power shift
Ewan Mitchell described how much fun it was to explore Aemond’s sudden vulnerability:
“It was so much fun. It was really nice seeing Aemond that vulnerable, like physically, you know? Like throughout season one and two he’s always this relentless force, this energy. He’s always really stoic and strategic and calculated and there in that moment it just, you know, spins it on its head.”

Mitchell enjoyed flipping the script on Aemond’s usual demeanor. After seasons of Aemond being the calculated, intimidating force, seeing him off-balance and pleading created a fresh dynamic that surprised both the actor and the audience.
The connection between Aemond and Alys
Gayle Rankin spoke about the intriguing energy between the two characters and the possibilities it opens up:
“Yeah, it feels like a really wonderful like cliffhanger, an opportunity. Like it was like a huge like breath of like, because I think everybody thinks they know how this is going to go and I think that’s what’s so wonderful about this season is that every turn this show tells you, no you don’t, no you don’t, no you don’t, which is really cool.”
Rankin’s comments suggest that the Aemond-Alys relationship could defy expectations, bringing new layers of tension, alliance, or something more complex as the season progresses.
Impact of the moment
Aemond has been one of the most relentless and intimidating characters since Season 1. Watching him arrive at Harrenhal “guns blazing” only to end up in a position of need flips the power dynamic on its head. This shift not only humanizes Aemond but also sets up exciting possibilities for his storyline and his interactions with Alys Rivers moving forward.
