Tom Glynn-Carney, who plays Aegon II Targaryen, has shared new insight into his character’s belief that his dragon Sunfyre is still alive in Season 3. In a recent interview with Decider, Glynn-Carney described the deep, almost supernatural connection between Aegon and Sunfyre:
“I think any dragon rider has a sort of sixth sense. I compare it to the relationship I have with my dog, who is my best friend, and knows me better than most people, and I can read his mind. I feel like it’s the same with Sunfyre. There’s a sort of like you said, a supernatural bond between them which pairs them in the first place. The reason that they found each other was because there’s a synergy there. Yeah, so there’s definitely a sniff in the air of where he is.”

A bond beyond words
Glynn-Carney’s comments emphasize that Aegon’s connection with Sunfyre goes far beyond a typical rider-dragon relationship. In Episode 4, he sees a decaying Sunfyre and gets emotional. However, he senses that Sunfyre is still alive and recovering, even if the two are currently separated.
This “sixth sense” gives Aegon hope and a sense of direction during a difficult time in his journey. However, Larys Strong advises him to get out of there as soon as possible to avoid danger, so he takes one of Sunfyre’s scales with him.

What this means for Season 3
Aegon’s belief that Sunfyre is alive sets up one of the most anticipated moments of the season; a potential reunion between the king and his dragon. Their bond has always been portrayed as exceptionally strong, and Glynn-Carney’s words suggest that the show might explore this connection further as the story progresses.
This also aligns with book lore, where Sunfyre plays a significant role later in the Dance of the Dragons, and fans have been eager to see how the show adapts that relationship on screen.
Aegon’s emotional state
The actor’s analogy of comparing the bond to that of a person and their dog adds a personal and emotional layer to Aegon’s character. It shows that beneath Aegon’s often brash and entitled exterior lies a genuine, almost instinctual attachment to his dragon; one of the few relationships he truly values.
As Season 3 continues, it will be interesting to see how Aegon’s belief in Sunfyre influences his decisions and whether it leads to a long-awaited reunion.
