Production on the fourth and final season of House of the Dragon is officially moving forward. According to industry reports circulating today, physical production work is scheduled to begin in October 2026 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK.

The update, first shared by production tracking account @FilmBaseUK, confirms that the long-awaited final chapter of the Dance of the Dragons is entering the active production phase at the show’s primary base.

What “production” means here

While principal photography (cameras rolling with the full cast) is still expected to start in early 2027, the October 2026 start date refers to the intensive pre-production and set-construction phase at Leavesden. This includes:

  • Building and modifying the massive sets
  • Script revisions and final prep
  • Location scouting wrap-up
  • The beginning of the heavy logistical work

This timeline lines up closely with Condal’s recent comments to Empire. In mid-August he confirmed the show is “on schedule,” with prep starting in the fall of 2026 and filming proper beginning in early 2027.

The final season timeline

  • Scripts: Essentially complete (first drafts already shared with HBO earlier this summer)
  • Pre-production / Set work: Begins October 2026 at Leavesden
  • Principal photography: Early 2027 (spring start to take advantage of British daylight)
  • Expected release: 2028

Season 4 will consist of eight episodes; the same length as Seasons 2 and 3, and is being described by Condal as the biggest and most ambitious season yet. Internally, the team has been calling it “the Last Dance.”

Leavesden returns as home base

Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden has been the central hub for House of the Dragon since Season 1. The sprawling facility outside Watford houses the iconic multi-level Red Keep sets and most of the show’s major interior stages. Season 3 filmed there from March to October 2025, and Season 4 will once again make it the epicenter of the production.

With set construction and prep now locked in for October, the final season of House of the Dragon is officially on the clock. Fans can expect the usual two-year gap between seasons, but the machine is already humming back to life at Leavesden.

The Dance of the Dragons is heading into its final act.
