Fans eagerly awaiting HBO’s new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will experience a world that skillfully balances between the darkness of Game of Thrones and the vibrant tones of a medieval fairytale. Showrunner Ira Parker, speaking at NYCC 2025, offered insights into the show’s unique aesthetic, emphasizing its commitment to authenticity over fantasy sheen.

Authentic Colors and Grit

As Ira Parker explained (via WIC), the show draws inspiration from the 14th century—the era’s exuberance for colors is woven throughout the scenes. “When you look at the 14th century, they love their colors. You know, this was a very colorful period,” he said, noting that audiences can expect the series to be “even more colourful than… the tournament that we show.”

While tournaments burst with fun and spectacle, Parker highlights their realism, ensuring brilliant hues never stray into the “fairytale” realm. The creators have been meticulous about lighting, particularly during night scenes—“we were very careful not to just cast this big strong lights… We want this feel as real, as gritty, and honest as possible.” Each episode plays with bold contrasts, reflecting the ups and downs inherent in Westeros.

Never Too Bright, Never Too Dark

Parker elaborated on the balancing act: “Bright is a very dangerous thing… if you make it too bright, it does read as sort of fantasy-ish fairy tale.” The series is designed to avoid simplistic fantasy aesthetics, instead capturing life’s oscillation between grayness and color—even after tragedy, “the sun comes out again.”

Particularly in the fourth episode, the palette deepens, as most scenes unfold at night, exemplifying the show’s willingness to embrace darkness without succumbing to gloom. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms promises “a little bit of everything,” a journey that is at once fresh, bold, and rooted in emotional realism.
