The controversial kiss between Aemond Targaryen and his mother Alicent Hightower in House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 1 continues to spark heated discussions among fans. Showrunner Ryan Condal has now provided a detailed psychological explanation for the scene.

Quick read:

  • Ryan Condal assured fans that Aemond does not love his mother Alicent romantically
  • The kiss between them was a result of Aemond’s deep-seated trauma
  • Aemond can’t really distinguish between his feelings

The real explanation

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ryan Condal directly addressed the moment that left many viewers stunned. He explained that the kiss stems from deep-seated trauma in Aemond’s past:

“He’s somebody that was traumatized at an early age by his brother by taking him to a brothel long before his brain could probably process what was happening. As these things do, that trauma then manifests a certain way in his behavior as an adult. While I don’t think that Aemond is necessarily in love with his mother, I don’t think he’s able to separate the feelings that he has for her from these other male feelings that he experiences.”

Condal emphasized that Aemond’s behaviour is a direct result of childhood trauma that manifests in unhealthy ways during adulthood.

The source of Aemond’s trauma

According to Condal, the roots of this complex dynamic trace back to a pivotal and disturbing event in Aemond’s youth. When Aemond was still a young boy, his older brother Aegon took him to a brothel long before he was emotionally or mentally ready to process such an experience. This unresolved trauma, combined with Alicent’s fierce protection of him; most memorably when she drew a knife to defend him after he lost his eye has created blurred emotional boundaries.

As Aemond steps into a leadership role for Team Green, he desperately wants to become the protector and provider for his family, often expressing it in unsettling ways.

Alicent’s role and reaction

The scene itself shows Alicent attempting to show affection and manipulate the situation for political reasons. Aemond misreads her gesture and kisses her on the lips. Alicent’s reaction; one of visible shock, discomfort, and fear highlights her growing powerlessness against her now-dominant son.

Condal also pointed out that Alicent herself carries significant trauma from her own youth, having been groomed by her father Otto and married off at a young age to King Viserys.

Why the show chose this scene

This mother-son kiss is not present in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. It was created specifically for the series to explore themes of generational trauma, dysfunctional family bonds, and the long-term psychological effects of violence and neglect within the Targaryen line.

Ewan Mitchell, who plays Aemond, has supported this interpretation, describing his character’s desire to “be the daddy” and provide for Alicent in his own “peculiar way.” The scene has polarized the fandom, with some praising its bold psychological depth and others finding it unnecessarily disturbing. Regardless of personal reactions, it has become one of the most talked-about moments of Season 3 so far.
