Landing a Role Before Kindergarten

According to Ansell, the audition process was surprisingly straightforward. “When I was very young, a soap opera called Emmerdale, which is in England, they came up to us saying, ‘Would you like to audition?’ Just randomly.” The decision to try out was made almost casually, but what happened next proved his talent was undeniable. “I’m only four at this point. Three pages of scripts. Full thing. I go in with my grandma, do the audition, and 20 minutes later, they give us a call saying, ‘You got the job.’” Landing a role in a major soap opera at that age wasn’t just a win—it was a launching pad.

Ansell spent several years working on Emmerdale, gaining invaluable experience in front of the camera while most children his age were still figuring out how to tie their shoes.

Taking the Risk That Changed Everything

As he got older, a critical decision loomed. The young actor had to choose between staying with the soap opera—a stable gig that paid the bills—or risking it all for the possibility of more diverse, film-based work. The choice wasn’t an easy one.

“I did that for a few years, and then I had to make a decision whether I wanted to carry on this soap opera, and I couldn’t do anything else, or I quit it and I can do other films, but it was a risk because I didn’t know if I’d get any other things.” It’s the kind of gamble most actors fear. Walking away from guaranteed work is terrifying, especially as a child. But Ansell had the support he needed.

“My mom let me have the decision, and I was like, ‘I’m gonna take this risk.’ And then I’ve just gone on to do all other things.” That calculated leap of faith paid off spectacularly. Rather than being locked into a single role, Ansell went on to build a diverse acting portfolio that eventually led him to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, where he’s now captivating audiences alongside Peter Claffey as the brilliant and deceptive Egg.
