HBO’s hit Game of Thrones prequel spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, just wrapped its first season, and fans already have major new details about what’s next. In a fresh interview with Variety, the show’s showrunner and co-creator, Ira Parker, has officially confirmed that Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and young Aegon V Targaryen (Egg) will travel to Dorne in Season 2.
Quick read:
• Dunk and Egg will ride to Dorne for the second season
• Season 2 is adapted from George R.R. Martin’s book, ‘The Sworn Sword’
• Dunk and egg are expected to cross paths with many known figures from the books
What did Ira Parker reveal?
The big reveal from Ira Parker came right after the season 1 finale. Parker addressed one of the biggest lingering questions from the show’s closing moments:
“They do go to Dorne. How much of that we cover, I’ll leave up to people to tune in for Season 2. I don’t know if I’m supposed to talk about it yet.”
He quickly added that the series remains largely faithful to George R.R. Martin’s source material saying,
“For the most part, we’re following the books. So Season 1 was ‘The Hedge Knight.’ Season 2 is ‘The Sworn Sword.’ Hopefully, if we get to Season 3 it’ll be ‘The Mystery Knight.’”
This confirmation has sent the fandom into overdrive. The season 1 finale ended with Dunk and Egg riding off into new adventures, explicitly mentioning several possible destinations including the sun-drenched, politically charged lands of Dorne.
Why Dorne matters?
Dorne is one of the most beloved and visually striking regions in Westeros, famous for its desert landscapes, spicy food, passionate people, and the fiery Martell motto: “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken.” Seeing Dunk and Egg navigate its politics and culture will be a massive treat for longtime Game of Thrones fans, especially since we’ve never seen Dorne this early in the timeline on screen.
Another interesting aspect could be Dunk crossing paths with puppeteer Tanselle once again. As fans learn from episode 4 of the show that Tanselle and her crew have set foot for Dorne from Steely Pate, this could happen. It also sets up potential future crossovers: younger versions of characters who will later play huge roles in the main saga, deeper Targaryen lore, and the kind of grounded, character-driven storytelling that made Season 1 such a refreshing return to Westeros.
What this means for season 2
Season 2 will primarily follow the second Dunk and Egg novella, ‘The Sworn Sword’ which sees the duo serving as hedge knights in the Reach. But Parker’s comments suggest the show will expand beyond the novel’s pages.
George R.R. Martin once outlined (but never fully wrote) a short story set between The Hedge Knight and The Sworn Sword featuring Dunk and Egg’s adventures in Dorne. The show now appears ready to bring at least part of that unadapted material to screen, potentially introducing Dornish intrigue, the Martell family, and the unique culture of the southernmost kingdom years before the events of Game of Thrones. Fans can expect a mix of book-accurate plot points and new expansions.
