Kerr Logan has no problem with being stereotyped as the bad guy on screen for the rest of his career.
Although his latest role is a departure from that of the villain, the Game of Thrones star believes “bad guys are much more interesting to play”.
“I guess if I was pigeonholed into anything I always tend to play not particularly nice characters, which of course is devastating for my mother,” Logan says.
“To be fair, if I had to play a bad guy for the rest of my life, even though it would devastate my mother further, I would be very pleased.
“No character is bad for no reason, there is always an underlying issue. You have to find a justification in everything that they do and you have to have empathy with them in order to try and play these characters truthfully. I enjoy the challenge of playing someone who isn’t particularly nice but finding the justification for all of the bad things that they do.”
UK-based Logan, who is married to Scottish actor Sara Louise Vickers, is best known to date as Matthos Seaworth on Game Of Thrones.
His latest project sees the father-of-one play a very different character, this time as a grave digger and aspiring photographer in Acorn TV series, Dead Still.
The Irish murder mystery “dramedy” series is set in the Victorian era and is based around post-mortem photography, a trend in those days whereby the deceased were snapped in commissioned portraits.
“I had never heard of post-mortem photography until I started doing the show,” Logan says.
The 31-year-old plays the dutiful assistant of 1880s Dublin memorial photographer Brock Blennerhasset (Michael Smiley), with the pair drawn into a series of murders that appear to be linked to their work.
“On this production to be fair, I think it is the first time I’ve got to play a very genuinely nice warm character,” he says. “I (my character) didn’t have an ulterior motive, I was just a very genuinely lovely guy, which was refreshing.”
There is already talk of a second season.
“With any of these shows that involve comedy, you feel like you are finding your chemistry and finding the style of the show as you go along,” he says. “So I think if we were ever given a chance to do another series, I think the chemistry would be even better, the comedy would come through more, the relationships and characters would get more time to grow and we could explore more storylines, so I really hope it does go again.”
Logan’s other credits include Victoria, Alias Grace, London Irish and Genius. He can also be seen in new episodes of TV crime drama series Strike, based on the J.K. Rowling novels she wrote under pseudonym Robert Galbraith.
Hollywood is on the radar for Logan, although he is in no rush.
