The boss of HBO has explained how the network decides which Game of Thrones spin-offs to move forward with.

The flagship series ended after eight seasons in 2019, with a number of projects centred in and around Westeros announced in quick succession.

The first of these was The Long Night, an Age of Heroes prequel starring Naomi Watts and developed by Jane Goldman and George RR Martin, which was pulled by HBO shortly after shooting its pilot.

The second, House of the Dragon, was announced last year and ordered straight to a 10-episode series — which was then followed by the reveal in January that HBO is working on a separate Dunk and Egg prequel series.

Last year, HBO and HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys explained how even spin-offs could be in the pipeline and speaking recently, he opened up about how the decisions on which spin-offs to take forward are made — revealing that what the “fans love” is strongly taken into consideration.

“Obviously, we know George has this incredible world with all of this really rich and complicated history and all of these characters,” Bloys told TV Line.

“So we’ve been trying to be thoughtful about what are the stories that are worth telling.

“What would be exciting? What would fans love? Dunk and Egg is one of those, but not the only one.”

Explaining that the stories the creators and network staff are most excited about is all taken into account, he added: “[Ideally], we’ll let the creative dictate where we end up.”

Bloys previously told Variety about the spin-offs: “Those are fantastic properties that are decades and decades old.

“I don’t know that it would get that big, but certainly it is a great resource that we have and an amazing world. So I don’t think it’s just going to be the one [show] for the rest of its life.”

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray.
