Warning: This article contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season 8

Game of Thrones season eight, episode three is set to feature the biggest battle in the show’s history and Bran Stark (played by Isaac Hempstead-Wright) is central to luring the Night King (Vladimir Furdik) into Winterfell.

Episode two saw preparations for the battle at Winterfell take place with Bran revealing; ‘Yes he will he’ll come for me. He’s tried before many times with many Three-Eyed Ravens.’

This line has since been debated with the focus being on the ‘many times’ aspect of Bran’s statement.

One interesting, albeit, terribly confusing theory suggests that Bran is actually stuck in a time loop where the humans must fight the Night King.

Reddit user j48u laid the Bran time loop theory out on the site yesterday.

They wrote: ‘The basic assertion here is that the Three Eyed Raven is going through many time loops, or at least separate iterations of time, trying to stop the Night King. My theory about the show is that the 3ER is always Bran from start to finish.

‘The crux of all this is that in the show Bran is told several times, by both the 3ER and Jojen, that he can’t stay in a Greenseer vision or warged into something in the past for too long. He will be stuck there forever they said.

‘Now this is a TV show that does not waste many lines. I think this is a classic Checkov’s Gun situation. There’s no way they would throw that line in there multiple times if it didn’t affect the story. This was also the basis for the popular theory of how Bran could be the Night King.

‘So, Bran has fought tried to stop the NK many times before and failed each attempt so far. Each time he purposefully gets himself stuck at some point in the past to try again.’

The theory also outlines the possibility that Bran orchestrated past events, such as getting dragons to Winterfell and causing the Mad King Aerys to ‘burn them all’ with wildfire.

A lot to take in, right?

What this essentially boils down to is that Bran has the ability to restart time and has created several different realities and is trying to find the one where the humans manage to defeat the Army of the Dead.

Time loops on Game of Thrones aren’t exactly new and fans will remember the shocking Hodor/Hold the Door revelation.

Speaking of which, could Hodor return as a wight?

Game of Thrones season 8 continues on Sunday and Monday on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.
