The final season of Game of Thrones is nearly here. We have a release date, a trailer and posters.
With the battle for the Iron throne reaching its earth shattering end come April 2019, the cast of the award-winning series are slowly but surely shedding their character skins.
Some transformations are more shocking than others. Maisie Williams is swapping her dark hair for bright pink locks, and Emilia Clarke’s cosplay-worthy long hair has been chopped off.
Not only will season eight be a goodbye to the TV show, it’ll be goodbye to the characters we wept with, the heroes we loved and the ones we couldn’t wait to throw off a cliff.
Here are the transformations already taking place now that Game of Thrones wrapped up:
Maisie Williams
We have watched as Arya Stark grew up from her rough-and-tumble tomboy demeanour to an independent young woman with a mean sword hand.
She was often mistaken for a young boy, which suited her fine as she went through a stint of dressing up in male clothing and wearing her hair short.
Maisie premiered a completely different look on her social media recently. In what seems like a stretching of her fashion-muscles, she’s opted to dye her hair a bright, ostentatious pink. And we’re here for it.
Emilia Clarke
Emilia Clarke’s character Daenerys Targaryen went through a personality transformation, starting the show as a timid woman and one of the last surviving members of the House Targaryen. Known for her long, white-blond curls and sprawling dresses, her look hasn’t changed much – though everything else has. Fierce and ruthless, she leads a Dothraki army and plans to reclaim the Iron throne for herself.
Emilia seems to have had enough of the long bleach blond hair and has been experimenting with a pixie cut.
The actress went for the big chop after filming wrapped, and said at the time that it was because her Daenerys do had damaged her hair: ‘In other news this FABULOUS new bob is the chicest way to style out some burnt-out mother of dragons split ends.’
Kit Harington
Harington plays Jon Snow, another contender for the Iron Throne. He’s swapped out his not-quite-a-beard-beard for something a little neater. He also decided to gel his meme-worthy curls into some semblance of order, though it’s all for his new gig as Austin in the London production of True West. He even has a mustache, you guys.
Lena Headey
Lena Headey’s portrayal of the scheming Cersei Lannister has undergone a few transformations: she went from wearing her hair long and wavy, along with floor-length gowns to her hair chopped short and her black attire, perhaps to match her swiftly blackening soul.
Lena, on the other hand, appears to have gone back to her natural brunette roots. Whatever she wears, she’s still a rock star.
Vladimir Furdik
For good ol’ Vlad and his character the Night King, it’s less of a transformation and more of a de-robing. He’s probably happy to be out of all the makeup and prosthetics.
Game of Thrones director David Nutter teased fans with hints about the final season, describing it as ‘spectacular, inspiring, and satisfying.’
In a Reddit AMA, he talked hinted about season 8: ‘As far as season [eight] compared to the Red Wedding, I just have to tell you – hang onto your seat cause it’s going to be special.’
He added: ‘I guarantee there’s going to be lots of surprises and shocking moments, but it’s really very compelling stuff.’
Not long to go now.
Game of Thrones returns to HBO and Sky Atlantic in 2018.
