Ser Pounce survived Cersei’s wrath (Picture: HBO)

Game of Thrones may have ended last year with its eighth and final season, but one of its most enduring mysteries has finally been solved.

No, we’re not talking about Jon Snow’s parentage or Daenerys Targaryen’s sudden turn into madness…we’re talking about the fate of Ser Pounce.

The cat in question belonged to Cersei Lannister’s (Lena Headey) youngest son Tommen, who became King of the Seven Kingdoms after the brutal death of his brother Joffrey.

Tommen himself, of course, would sadly take his own life in the finale of Thrones’ sixth season after his mother blew up the Sept of Baelor, killing his wife Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer) and a whole host of other enemies.

Creators and showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss previously teased to Entertainment Weekly that the cute feline did not survive the events of the season.

‘Cersei hated the name Ser Pounce so much she could not allow him to survive,’ Benioff said previously.

‘So she came up with her most diabolical [execution]. Ser Pounce’s death was so horrible we couldn’t even put it on the air.’

And that, it appears, was that – but now the animal specialists who looked after Ser Pounce (real name Womble) have revealed he is alive and well.

‘He is owned by us still and is retired with one of our trainers,’ Birds and Animals UK’s Jo Vaughn told HuffPost.

Thank god for that – we were practically having kittens over the stress.

This is not the only plot hole that Game of Thrones fans needed filled in following the ending of HBO’s high-fantasy epic.

For example, there’s the weapon that might just have helped Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) defeat the Night King…

And if you’re already missing the programme or licking your wounds from that finale- it turns out you won’t have long for a reprieve as the first prequel series has already started to cast its main characters.

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are now available to stream on NOW TV.
