Warning: Game of Thrones‘ second episode of its eighth season is out in the world. If you don’t want to know, then don’t continue reading.
Don’t get us wrong here. The dragons of Game of Thrones are cool. But the direwolves are cool too, and they’ve been around longer — and killed off earlier, too, even as puppies. Two still live, as far as we know, with Nymeria out in the wilds and Ghost still technically back with Jon Snow, as far as we know.
On tonight’s episode, we actually got to confirm that Ghost is alive and well, as he makes an appearance in the episode. It’s very brief, but you can spot him up on the wall when Jon and Sam are talking together.
It’s such a small thing, but there’s really only been one companion at Jon’s side from the beginning of the show until now, and that’s Ghost. Everyone else has been away from him for some time, or didn’t meet him until later.
What we really want to know is whether or not Ghost will get to bite some wights, White Walkers, and the like. Would it kill him if he tore their flesh? We know that the Night King can make an undead dragon. A direwolf almost seems like a step down, frankly, so if he should die in next week’s episode, we might get ourselves a zombie wolf and a particularly hard battle for Jon in particular.
We won’t know until next week.
