Casting for the much-hyped Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, has reportedly begun.

Set hundreds of years before the start of HBO’s high-fantasy epic, the new serial will track the arrival of House Targaryen to Westeros after the destruction of their homeland, Valyria.

Events of the series will be based on the pseudo-fictional history of Westeros written by A Song of Ice and Fire scribe George RR Martin and complied in Fire and Blood.

Now, according to EW, HBO is moving forward with the House of the Dragon in a big way, as the casting process has begun.

HBO have committed to a 10 episode first season of the show, which will be helmed by veteran Thrones director Miguel Sapochink and writer Ryan Condal, with additional input from Martin, given that the show will be an adaption of Fire and Blood.

It is, however, unclear which characters are being cast right now – it was reported earlier this year that casting calls had been sent out for the three most famous figures in the Targaryen Dynasty; siblings Aegon, Rhaenys and Visenya Targaryen, the original conquerors of Westeros.

As a guide, however, Fire and Blood tracks from the Targaryen’s original conquering of Westeros to the splintering of the family with the Dance of the Dragons civil war.

The Dance of the Dragons happens almost 200 years before the main narrative of Game of Thrones, but its fractious civil war does set the foundation for the un-happy rule of the last Targaryen king of Westeros (and Dany’s father), Aerys II, the Mad King.

So basically, we could be in for the long-haul if the House of the Dragon manages to take flight with success.

We’re already placing bets on the first actor or actress to don a white wig.

House of the Dragon comes to HBO at an as-yet-unconfirmed date. Game of Thrones is available to stream via NOW TV.
