Matt Smith has shared his excitement about appearing in the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, admitting that he’s ‘looking forward to riding a few dragons’.

It was recently announced that Matt, along with Bates Motel actor Olivia Cooke and Truthseekers star Emma D’Arcy, will star in the HBO show about House Targaryen.

Set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, Matt will portray the unpredictable Prince Daemon Targaryen, the younger brother of King Viserys Targaryen, played by Hot Fuzz actor Paddy Considine.

On Saturday 12 December, Matt, 38, appeared on a live-streamed Doctor Who Q&A for GalaxyCon Live alongside his former co-stars Jenna Coleman, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill.

During the interview, Matt was asked about what aspect of the Game of Thrones spin-off he is most looking forward to.

‘Well, god, everything,’ he replied. ‘I think it’ll be a really exciting cast. I think it’s a wonderful legacy to be a part of and a wonderful world. It’s a great part.’

‘And without saying too much, I’m just looking forward to riding a few dragons,’ he said, before adding: ‘If I get to, I mean I don’t know, who knows. Who knows what sort of goes on in this world.’

Matt added that he is ‘looking forward to getting started’, saying that he believes with the cast involved on the project, ‘it could be really exciting’.

In House of the Dragon, Olivia, 26, will play Alicent Hightower, a woman with close connections to the throne as the daughter of the Hand of the King.

Emma, 28, will depict Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, a fierce dragonrider and eldest child of the king.

The series is due to go into production in 2021, it was recently revealed.

It will be an adaptation of A Game of Thrones author George RR Martin’s novel Fire and Blood, which ends with a massive battle known as the Dance of the Dragons.

House of the Dragon is expected to be released in 2022.
