HBO had word with George RR Martin after he announced the Game of Thrones prequel title too early (Picture: HBO)

Sorry to disappoint guys, but the Game of Thrones prequel doesn’t have a title after all.

Last week, George RR Martin – brains behind the franchise – appeared to announce that the mysterious Game of Thrones spin-off series would be called The Long Night, . So, understandably, millions of us got far too excited and the blow that the eighth and final series of Game of Thrones is dawning on us suddenly felt a little softer.

Writing on his blog, the author told fans that The Long Night hasn’t been signed off yet, and HBO have been in touch…

‘HBO has informed me that the Jane Goldman pilot is not (yet) titled THE LONG NIGHT,’ he said. ‘That is certainly the title I prefer, but for the moment the pilot is still officially UNTITLED. So… mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa.

‘Elsewise, the pilot is coming along well, with casting falling into place. I could tell you more, but I am not supposed to.

‘We also have a couple of other successor shows still in development, but I cannot tell you about those either. Sorry. And some exciting things are happening with the Wild Cards television series, but I can’t talk about those…

‘Hush hush, it’s Hollywood, they like news to come through officially approved channels out there.’

So there you have it. The Long Night isn’t actually a thing – yet. However, we do know that Naomi Watts has been cast as the untitled show’s lead, alongside Poldark star Josh Whitehouse.

Little is known about the planned spin-off, other than it’ll take place thousands of years before events in Game Of Thrones in the Age Of Heroes.

In GoT lore, the Age Of Heroes began with the pact which brought about peace between the First Men and the Children Of The Forest at the end of the Dawn Age.

As for Game of Thrones, season eight will arrive on HBO and Sky Atlantic in 2018.
