Game of Thrones teased its season eight air date with a trailer featuring statues of Jon, Arya and Sansa but fans have noticed Jon’s statue seems a lot older and they’ve got a lot of questions.
The stone figures in question pop up in the teaser for the final series air date, as Jon, Arya and Sansa come face to face with their likenesses in the crypts beneath Winterfell.
Each statue is a pretty decent likeness of the characters. There’s not too much dodgy action figure face work going on at all. But there is a stark difference between the male and female effigies.
Arya’s looks pretty much like the Arya we know and worship.
And Sansa’s statue isn’t too bad a likeness either, even if the sculptor has failed to feature her always on point brows.
Can’t win them all.
But when it comes to Jon’s statue, fans are scratching their heads.
It really does look quite a bit older than the other two.
We could put our feelings about the statue into words, but we think Jon’s face says it all, really.
He glanced up at his likeness with this expression that spoke for the world:
Fans are understandably curious about this latest development and have already (of course) got a theory about what it could mean.
‘Seriously, does this mean Sansa and Arya are gonna die young and Jon won’t? WHY,’ one fan theorised on Twitter.
And they weren’t alone in their thinking when it came to the statues offering up hints about each character’s season eight fate.
Needless to say, Arya and Sansa fans are not best pleased, with some threatening a ‘global purge’ if the show opts to kill off their beloved Stark ladies.
But what if we’ve all got it wrong? What if all three of them are doomed to die in the final outing?
Because as one fan oh so cleverly pointed out, we’ve only ever seen statues of the dead in Winterfell’s crypts. The trio passed the dearly departed Eddard, Lyanna and Catelyn on their way to see the new additions.
We saw the White Walkers’ cold white mist blow out Jon’s torch and come creeping towards the trio at the end of the air date teaser.
Could it be that winter comes for all of them in season eight?
Game of Thrones returns to TV screens in the UK and USA on Sunday 14 April.
