The Game of Thrones book series is going to end differently to the TV adaptation following the fantasy show’s controversial season 8 finale, George RR Martin has implied.

In 2019, Game of Thrones came to an end after eight years, in an episode that saw Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) torch King’s Landing, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) kill her to prevent further destruction and Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) become the new king of the Seven Kingdoms.

The finale sparked a lot of uproar among diehard fans of the series, with Clarke recently admitting that she understands ‘why people were p***ed’.

While the first book in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series – A Game of Thrones – was published in 1996, fans are still waiting for Martin to publish the sixth book in the series, The Winds of Winter, which will be followed by the seventh (and supposedly last) instalment A Dream of Spring.

When the books are finally published, it appears Martin is going to pen a different ending to the story, having said that he ‘never thought’ the TV series ‘would catch up with me’.

While speaking to news station wttwchicago, Martin said: ‘They caught up with me and passed me and you know, that made it a little strange because now the show was ahead of me and the show was going in somewhat different directions so I’m still working on the book but you’ll see my ending when that comes out.’

Note the emphasis on ‘my ending’. We can’t wait to discover what Martin has in store!

The author added that his ‘biggest issue’ was that when Game of Thrones first started airing, he ‘had four books already in print and the fifth one came out just as the series was starting in 2011’.

‘I had a five-book head-start and these are gigantic books as you know; I never thought they would catch up with me but they did,’ he remarked.

While it may be a while until fans learn how the conquest for the Iron Throne ends in A Song of Ice and Fire, Game of Thrones fans will soon be transported back to Westeros in TV prequel House of the Dragon.

Set around 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon will place a focus on the Targaryen family at the height of their power, starring Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke.

Game of Thrones is available to watch on Sky and NOW.
