It’s really hard to be bored by any video that utilizes the Game of Thrones soundtrack, so maybe I’m just getting overly hyped, but after seeing the new trailer announcing the debut city of the Game of Thrones Touring Exhibition, I’m about to hop on a plane to Barcelona. Who’s coming with me?
Sure, we knew it was nebulously “coming soon,” but now we know for sure the new 10,000-square-foot interactive fan exhibit produced by HBO and GES Events will debut on Oct. 28 at the Museum Maritim in Barcelona. As you can see in the well-soundtracked trailer below – yes, this touring exhibition needs a trailer – winter is coming to Spain, and it looks glorious.
According to the exhibits’ website, where you can pre-purchase tickets now (airfare not included), the travelling show will utilize “a unique mix of immersive environments, interactives, and multimedia content,” and will utilize “authentic props, costumes, and set decorations” to recreate many of Westeros’ most popular tourist destinations, including the North, the Kingsroad, King’s Landing, Meereen, Castle Black, the Wall (and north of it!), the House of Black and White, and the Iron Throne room.
The trailer shows but a snippet of snipping and stitching and hammering and arms hammering, but you can see it’s all about the craftsmanship of the artists, from so many mediums, who come together each and every season to present a show that continues to outdo itself, artistically speaking. And one awarded as such, with a staggering 38 Primetime Emmys to its good name (although the series is ineligible at this Sunday’s ceremony).
Of course, all that artisanal goodness will certainly benefit from being held in Barcelona, the city that remains, some 20 years later, the coolest city I’ve ever visited. The streets just curve and bend and expand and contract and there’s mysteries and delights around every ancient corner. It’s the city that houses THE Picasso museum, honoring, in my mind, the greatest artist to ever paint (a statement I confidently started making after visiting said museum). So it’s only fitting that the exhibit representing the greatest artistic achievements in television in the last decade (and likely more) should debut in the same town. Because art, and Winter, is coming to a town near you.
