What does this mean for the Game of Thrones universe?
HBO remains the home for all the Game of Thrones content: All series including Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon season 3 premiering June 2026, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 in development, continue on HBO and HBO Max as before. No cancellations, platform shifts, or production disruptions are confirmed.
Paramount plans to combine Paramount+ (79 million subscribers) and HBO Max (around 131 million) into a single, more competitive platform. This could create a powerhouse service rivaling Netflix/Disney+, bundling HBO’s premium GOT content with Paramount’s hits (Star Trek, Yellowstone, Mission: Impossible).GOT universe shows might become accessible via this merged app and might get possibly rebranded or built around HBO Max’s interface for prestige appeal.
The entire Westeros IP (books adapted via HBO, potential future spin-offs, games, merch) moves under Paramount Skydance, led by David Ellison. This brings it alongside franchises like Transformers and Top Gun, potentially leading to more cross-promotion or expanded adaptations.
Though this is a big move in the business and media world, fans are relieved that the Game of thrones universe will continue to be a part of HBO.
